Artist 10

1983-1985
Sally Mann

This photo is from Sally Mann's series 'at twelve' where she photographed young women. I was drawn to this photo because the subject of the photo is a young twelve year old girl. But in the background is a couple making out or doing something like that. I think its an interesting setting to photograph this girl in. It also is a very real setting, the girl with no shoes and the dogs, and the women in the background is probably her sister or mother, along with the open beer sitting on the car. This whole scene is very realistic, and also reminds of the south.

Harry Callahans muse was his wife Eleanor. After they married Callahan became interested in photography and switched his carreer. His wife was the subject of most of his photographs along with their daughter Barbara. Eleanor Callahan says "  “I never complained, whatever I was doing. If he said: ‘Come quick, Eleanor — there’s a good light,’ I was right there.”  She was very supportive of her husbands work.  I enjoy this story becuase someday I would like my partner to me by muse. The greatest emotion is love, and so what is better to photograph then your love ones. Also, its like you have a live in model, you always have someone to pose for you, if they are willing.

Artist #7

USA. Hollywood, California. 1988. "Slayer, Errol Flynn Squat, Hollywood."
USA. San Francisco, California. 2000

I first fell in love with Jim Goldbergs work last semester, there is something I am drawn to when text is combined with photographs. Goldberg is based out of California, and it is represented in his photographs. When i see his photos, i think Cali. His photos show real people doing real things, it is not always clean and friendly.

Robert and Shana ParkHarrison are a husband and wife team. The metaphors for their art work is all the same, peoples effect on the envirnment and linking the two together. Both of the photos aboce are from their series 'Gray Dawn'. I immediatly liked there work becuase of the surreal quality that their photos have.

Yesterday's Sandwich

I very much enjoyed this reading. The first few sections 'beauty', 'An Era', and 'An Encoded Reality' were my fovorite. These sections seemed to have a common theme, and that is what is beautiful to some, may not be considered beautiful to another. I feel like this is extrememly true, the weird and old are some of the most interesting delightful things to me. But to some, they are not seen as pretty and unique, but unpleasent. To me its the dirt and grime that is becuatiful. " Id take the beauty of chaos over ugly perfection".

The end of Firpo in the world

This short reading was very interestingly written. The amount of detail put into each sentence was incredible, gave you answers to every question you would ever have about the subjects he is talking about. the very long run on sentences were different. It reminded me of a lyric essay, where every paragraph is written about something different all relating to a main subject.
